ST272: Poo-proof Buoy: How To Keep Navigation Aids Clean

Tan Xue Jia Universiti Utara Malaysia

Marine navigation aids like buoys are crucial for safe maritime transit, but they often suffer from fouling, including biological debris and waste, impacting visibility and functionality. This study explores fouling issues on navigation aids and proposes innovative solutions. By employing advanced coatings, environmentally friendly deterrents, and smart monitoring systems, we aim to create "poo-proof" buoys. Implementing these measures can significantly enhance the longevity and effectiveness of navigation aids, reducing maintenance costs by approximately 67%. Ensuring clean buoys improves marine navigation safety and efficiency, offering a cost-efficient solution to fouling challenges.
