Pattani salt is the mineral-rich, but low-cost natural resource of Pattani province in Thailand. Similarly, Spilanthes Acmella (Toothache plant) contains antibacterial spilanthol, yet treated as an agricultural waste product. SAL-SPIL is the prototype of 0.9% Saline water from Pattani salt mixed with 50 mg/ml of Spilanthes acmella flower extract. This possesses an antibacterial property against Staphylococcus aureus while conventional saline water does not. The antibacterial property however was less than positive control Gentamycin. This initiative could potentially increase the economic value of Pattani salt from 20 baht/kilogram to 7,000 baht/kilogram of SAL-SPIL which eventually improves the farmer’s quality of life.
