BrainBoost is an educational app to assist and motivate students in their studies and it is crafted to address the pressing issue of student mental health and motivation in Malaysia. 26.9% of Malaysian teenagers reported experiencing depression. The app was developed based on concerns over students' lack of motivation and ineffective study practices. We selected 4 Minimum Viable Products (MVP): search engine, study materials, quiz mode and focus mode.
We developed the user interface using Visily and the app through Thunkable. We applied a soft, light colour scheme in our user interface to create a stimulating learning environment.
BrainBoost provides a total of 7 features. The integrated search engine is connected to Wikipedia, which allows students to access a vast library of educational content easily. Next, our study materials include the Ministry of Education Malaysia syllabus’ online textbooks and explanatory videos, eliminating the need to carry physical books. Furthermore, BrainBoost provides interactive quizzes with immediate feedback to reinforce learning and improve memory retention. Another critical component is the Focus Mode which is designed to tackle the issue of motivation. This feature enables users to set and track daily study targets, recording the time spent on various subjects and displaying progress through a visual progress bar. Meanwhile, confetti will pop out as a reward to students when they achieve their study goals.
Next, some improvements after the user testing session include an exam countdown feature and the ability to update quiz content dynamically through a Google Sheets database.
BrainBoost plans to expand its content library, introduce fun learning modules and explore AI for real-time interactive support. Additionally, we aim to partner with local businesses and government agencies to reach more students and provide them with additional resources and rewards.
