JS1179: HUSK STRAW

Maveesha Parameswaran SJKT KAJANG

Straws that do get recycled often don’t make it through the mechanical recycling sorter because they are so small and lightweight. They contaminate recycling loads or get disposed of as garbage. It is estimated that the average person uses 1.6 straws per day. That means that if 25,000 people stop using straws, we would eliminate 5,000,000 straws and prevent them from harming the environment. Corn husks are the outer covering of an ear of corn. Corn husks are commonly the whole husk and are sun, air or oven dried. For most applications the Corn husks need to be soaked in hot water to become pliable. Corn husks are mostly used to encase foods to be steamed or baked, imparting a very light corn flavour. Corn husks can be used in the presentation of a dish but are not edible and should be discarded after use. We, The Earth Guardians, have invented straw using the corn husk to replace plastic straw. Materials used are corn husk, turmeric powder, plain water, homemade glue and 9MM x 30CM Round Stick. This is 100% organic, low cost and environmentally friendly product.
