ST2311: Sustainable Oil: Creating Chemicals From Waste

Teoh Rui Hong University Of Nottingham Malaysia

Crude oil is a key raw material for many industries as it is a source of liquid organic carbon. Although renewable energy sources can replace crude oil for electricity generation, they cannot replace crude oil as a raw material for industry. Biomass is renewable solid waste from plants and animals that contains solid carbon. However, it needs to be converted into liquid form to replace crude oil. The solution is to use hydrothermal liquefaction to convert solid biomass into liquid biocrude oil. Biocrude oil contains phenols, enones and esters which are used to produce pharmaceuticals, plastics and lubricants.
