EcoGon project aims to transform cogon grass, which typically grows wild and is often underutilized, into a useful material for producing environmentally friendly products such as photo frames. Cogon grass grows uncontrollably, especially in schoolyards and abandoned fields, and is often burned for land-clearing purposes. Of greater concern is that dry cogon grass is highly flammable during hot seasons, increasing the risk of uncontrolled fires and air pollution, which negatively impacts the environment.
This study demonstrates that dried and processed cogon grass can be used as a primary material to create strong, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable photo frames. This product not only reduces reliance on plastic but also adds value to a natural resource that has been previously neglected. The production process, which incorporates recycled materials, ensures that the product is safe and suitable for sustainability-based educational activities.
This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, by promoting the use of sustainable materials and reducing open burning. The study highlights the potential of cogon grass as an alternative resource in the craft industry and fosters green innovation among students.
