Vocabulary retention among English second language (ESL) learners is the fundamental aspect which builds up their ability to converse in the language. However traditional teaching methods in schools do not aid in their full comprehension of words which hinders their ability to utilise higher level vocabularies in their speaking and writing. These methods also fail to catch student’s attention and engagement in ESL classrooms. Wurd Warz seeks to tackle this by presenting students an innovative, gamified learning tool which offers an engaging, card-based alternative for vocabulary learning which is more student-centred and peer-friendly. The primary objective of this game is to enhance students' vocabulary by fostering interactive and competitive learning, encouraging them to use precise and expressive synonyms in writing and speaking. Students compete by drawing "core cards" with frequently used words and then replacing them with "bomb cards" that contain more complex synonyms. The game is made more dynamic and interactive by the addition of extra components like "challenge cards" and "disruptor cards," which enhance its strategic and competitive elements. A key strength of Wurd Warz is its adaptability and commercial scalability through expansion packs which are able to target not only students from different forms but also students with different proficiency levels and different category of vocabularies. This modular structure allows for a more targeted approach when teaching vocabulary in ESL classrooms with heighten student engagement and peer interaction.
