Eco-Cooler 2.0 is an environmentally sustainable, low-cost cooling system designed to help reduce indoor temperatures using simple science and recycled materials. Our innovation builds upon the principle of air compression and expansion, utilizing recycled plastic bottles mounted through a wooden or cardboard panel to convert hot outdoor air into cooler indoor air—without electricity or refrigerants. The design is enhanced with the integration of moisture-absorbing clay placed inside each bottle neck, which reduces humidity and increases comfort levels in humid climates.
To further improve efficiency, we incorporated a small solar-powered fan that assists in pulling airflow through the system. This not only promotes a more consistent cooling effect but also ensures the system operates completely off-grid using clean, renewable energy. The project promotes environmental awareness by reducing waste (through plastic bottle reuse), lowering energy consumption, and introducing sustainable cooling methods ideal for rural or low-income communities where access to air conditioning may be limited or nonexistent.
Throughout testing, the Eco-Cooler 2.0 demonstrated a noticeable temperature drop of several degrees Celsius, especially when installed in spaces exposed to direct sunlight. It works best when placed in windows or open wall spaces, allowing for maximum airflow. The inclusion of moisture-absorbing clay (or alternatives such as silica gel or charcoal) further helped create a dry, cool breeze, especially beneficial in tropical regions.
This project shows how scientific understanding, creativity, and environmental consciousness can combine to solve real-world problems. Eco-Cooler 2.0 offers a powerful example of sustainable innovation that is not only accessible and practical, but also contributes to a greener, cooler planet.
