Urban drainage systems frequently suffer from blockages due to debris accumulation, leading to flooding, health hazards, and costly maintenance. The Drainage Saver is an Arduino-based automated solution designed to detect and remove debris from drains, reducing reliance on manual cleaning and enhancing urban resilience. Utilizing an infrared sensor, a servo motor, and a custom mechanical arm, the prototype monitors debris levels and activates a cleaning mechanism when necessary. Experimental testing in simulated conditions showed the system’s effectiveness in clearing light debris, although performance under heavy loads revealed areas for improvement. Following analysis, design modifications—including the replacement of the servo motor with a higher-capacity model—were implemented to enhance capability. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 11, this project demonstrates how accessible technology can address real-world urban infrastructure challenges and support more sustainable and safer communities.
