“DirectionCraft Adventure” is a game-based learning innovation developed through the Minecraft platform for Year 3 pupils based on Topic 7, Out and About. This innovation is designed to enhance pupils’ understanding and usage of directional language such as “go straight”, “turn left” and “turn right” through an engaging and interactive virtual learning environment. Traditional language learning activities often rely on worksheets and textbook exercises, which may reduce pupils’ motivation and limit meaningful participation in the classroom. To address this issue, “DirectionCraft Adventure” integrates gamified learning elements to create a fun, immersive and student-centred learning experience that encourages active communication and exploration. The innovation is divided into three differentiated proficiency levels to support pupils with varying learning abilities. At the beginner level, pupils complete simple navigation tasks to recognise and understand basic directional phrases. Next, the intermediate level introduces a storyline-based mission where pupils work together to save “Mr Lemon” by following directions and solving challenges. Finally, in the advanced level, pupils assist a character named “Alex” in locating his schoolbag by interpreting clues and directions provided by NPC characters, which promotes independent learning, critical thinking and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). Through this interactive gameplay, pupils are able to apply language meaningfully while improving vocabulary retention, problem-solving skills, teamwork and also communication abilities. This innovation can also be adapted to be used in teaching different topics, with modifications made to the elements of the gameplay. In short, “DirectionCraft Adventure” serves as an innovative digital teaching resource that supports differentiated learning and meaningful technology integration in primary ESL classrooms.
