ST2199: Logistics & Transportation - Smart Road Safety System

SAW ZHI JIE Taylor's College

Abstract

This project introduces a smart pedestrian safety system designed to reduce accidents on busy roads by combining rotating bollards, ultrasonic sensors, LED indicators, and app-based alerts. This system replaces traditional crosswalks with interactive floor LEDs that display real-time instructions such as “Stop,” “Go,” and countdowns. Rotating bollards physically block or allow pedestrian movement based on traffic light signals, while static sidewalk bollards use sensors to detect pedestrian presence and trigger safe crossing intervals.

All bollards feature synchronized LED lights and speaker systems to enhance visibility and communication. The system also integrates with navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, alerting drivers approaching high-foot-traffic areas. Designed with durable and cost-effective materials, this innovation aims to improve pedestrian awareness, reduce driver distraction, and prevent jaywalking. This solution has strong commercial potential for use in high-traffic urban areas, school zones, and city intersections where pedestrian safety is critical.
