This project addresses the issue of learning loss among Primary 1 pupils in Malaysia, especially those in rural and indigenous communities, with a focus on Iban-speaking pupils in Sarawak. Many pupils struggle with 3M skills (Membaca, Menulis, Mengira - reading, writing, and arithmetic), affecting their ability to learn science. The Smart Science App integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) to teach science-related vocabulary while rebuilding these fundamental skills. Using tools like Teachable Machine and, the app enables students to recognize objects, learn their names in both English and Iban, trace vocabulary, and practice counting. This project focuses on helping Iban students master English through science learning, which is essential for overcoming learning loss. Early testing shows improvement in engagement, 3M skill acquisition, and English language proficiency. Additionally, the app supports Malaysia's Dual Language Programme, reinforcing the learning of both English and Iban.
