 (1) One of the most frequently experienced natural disasters in
Malaysia, particularly in its low-lying areas, is flooding. It poses a
difficult challenge in terms of safety, destruction to property, and
infrastructure which forcefully requires attentive action. Hence,
the pre-emption steps that can be taken to monitor the situation
are very important, as they can help alleviate the negative impacts
to some extent. (2) The objective of this project is to design and
build a basic flood sensor that can be assembled using low-cost
electronic parts. (3) The sensor for this project was constructed
using a float switch, a buzzer, and an Arduino microcontroller
which were designed to trigger warning signals when the water
level rises. The sensor was tested under various water levels in a
simulated tank to verify its effectiveness. (4) The investigation
showed that the sensor was working properly, as it was able to
detect increased water levels and send a warning alarm within 3
seconds. (5) This project demonstrates that it is possible to create
a DIY flood alert system at a low cost that can be used by people
living in areas prone to floods. In addition, it could be improved
further, for instance by allowing mobile connectivity.
