According to surveys ,13 million tonnes of garbage and waste disposal are being thrown to ocean each year. If we keep dumping this in the oceans, by 2050 there will be more garbage than fish in the sea. This is not only effecting aquatic life but also impacting living thing in the planet.
These wastages are also responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions such us methane.
The wastages also contribute to environmental cleanliness issues, such as rubbish accumulation.
To help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, pollution to the environment and to save the aquatic life, we have innovated a table with triple R concept.
What is triple R table – It`s a table which follows the 3R rule which is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The AIM of our innovation is from: SDG’s Goal 12 – to Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns to transform our world to be a better place to live for all the living things.
The objective of our innovation is to reduce the single- consumption use items and to avoid waste management issues by reducing, reusing items, and recycling materials in that order.
We have completely used recycled material for our innovation. The items are:
Used carton boxes
Thrown cans such as: condense milk and carbonated drink
Juice bottles plastic
Used downlight aluminum casing
Thrown egg trays
Bottle caps
Plastic straw
PVC pipe
Bulb
Flexible pipe
Wire and battery
Firstly, we have collected all the recycled materials from recycle center such as bottles, cans and carton boxes.
Then we structured the table according to the design.
The reasons the use of these materials:
Aluminum cans at the middle of the table is to create a strong base.
Egg trays are to cover the side of the smashed cans for safety purposes.
Straws at the side of the table are to cover the sharp edges.
Thick rice plastic to cover the table to ensure the table is water poof if water spills.
On the other hand, we have started to plan and execute our plan to design our Triple R table. We have gathered all the needed materials.
We started to wash the cans, then smash the cans, cut the carton boxes into the shapes that we needed.
The table has multi use even though it looks like an ordinary table.
The table has 3 layers whereby top, and bottom are made of carton boxes.
In between the layers, we inserted smashed cans and egg tray to build a strong base.
A table`s stability is always measured by its strong stand. To create such a stable stand for our table, we have come up with an idea to use a few used downlight aluminum casings and juice bottles. It holds the tabletop strongly.
Let’s move on to the most important parts of the table which are the drawers.
There are 4 drawers with different functions.
We have divided the drawer into 4 categories which are:
The first drawer contains an Abacus which is created by recycling bottle caps , straws and carton box.
The second drawer is created for science materials.
When the kids are bored with educational materials, they can use the 3rd drawer for games.
We have also created a word search and checker’s game.
The 4th drawer is very special which is the highlight of our Triple R table. It’s a unique chair made from aluminum cans. Once the drawer is pulled out, the small unique chair will appear. Although small, it is very strong because of the aluminum cans.
Some other special features of the table which are very useful for the students are the 3 recycled plastic cups. We label it plastic, metal and paper. It is to train the students to practice 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.)
The students can use the table lamp, which was invented from the can, plastic bottle, pvc pipe, flexible pipe used bulb in the dark if they come early in the morning.
The table is very safe to use by students cause the tabletop is covered by rice plastic which is very thick. The students can keep their water bottle on the table without any worries that the water will spill. They can just wipe it with cloth.
The table edges are covered by plastic straws to avoid any injuries from the sharp edge.
Clock made from carton box and bottle’s cap , can be used by the students to manage their time. They can always look at the clock to ensure they are not late for the classes.
The concept of the "Three Rs of Sustainability" - reduce, reuse, and recycle - is central to many waste-management programs, but it is important to consider the wider systems involved in waste practices. This is our table”s concept. By using this table, the students will realise the 3R’s practice.
To ensure sustainable consumption and production practices necessarily entails to respect the biophysical boundaries of the planet and to reduce current global consumption rates in order to fit with the biophysical capacity to produce ecosystem services and benefits.
Conclusion
As a result, our innovation has saved the cost of buying a new table. This innovation has created awareness among the students to practice 3R. The practice encourages the students to reduce, reuse and recycle the materials used. The Goal 12’s aim Responsible Consumption and Production will be fulfilled by this young generation. We really welcome our young generation to follow our footstep in innovating new products without cutting trees and save the environment. Let’s save our planet for our future generation.
