ABSTRACT

The safety of human lives is a huge priority and involves investments exceeding millions of ringgit, especially in high-risk sectors. Lately, the number of casualties involving industrial accidents are reducing gradually in line with the modernisation of the country. However, we tend to ignore the high number of fatalities involving road accidents which are mainly caused by our own carelessness. The causes of road accidents are usually factors which can be controlled and improvements can be made. The number of road accidents due to carelessness is on the rise. There are a lot of cases in Malaysian highways whereby vehicles stopped at the emergency lane were hit from behind. This incident can be avoided if the driver of the stopped vehicle takes the precautionary steps to alert other road users, especially the ones who drive fast in the highway about the hazard ahead. Through the observation and study of road accidents and actions of road users, the TRIPLE HAZARD project was initiated. This project consists of three safety elements which are obstacle, lighting and movement. The obstacle is the object which is modified to a height which can be easily noticed by other drivers. This gives more time to other drivers to react quicker. Lighting refers the blinking light which is used in place of the conventional reflector used in hazard signages. Movement, on the other hand is a mechanism which waves a flag continuously to alert other road users of the hazard ahead. The innovation of hazard signage is capable of showing warning signs more effectively to other road users. Other road users will be able to see the warning sign from far due to its height. In a nutshell, this minor innovation could leave a huge impact towards the safety of road users and they will feel more confident driving on roads.
