Abstract (250 words)

The LitHubX: SJKC Perak Sally x Silas Project is a collaborative literacy intervention developed to improve English reading proficiency among primary school pupils. Implemented through a partnership between SJKC Perak and MYReaders, the project addresses persistent challenges faced by pupils who struggle with reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence in English. Many learners experience limited exposure to English communication, resulting in reduced classroom participation, lower motivation, and widening achievement gaps between proficient and struggling readers.

The project adopts a peer-guided reading approach in which stronger readers (“Sally”) support beginner readers (“Silas”) through structured reading sessions using graded MYReaders modules. Planning and development were carried out throughout 2023 and 2024, including the selection and organization of reading materials, collaboration with MYReaders, and the securing of sponsorship support. Following a pre-diagnostic assessment and parental briefing, the intervention was implemented over a period of 20 weeks, with pupils participating in one-hour reading sessions each week from May to November 2025.

To evaluate effectiveness, pre- and post-diagnostic assessments were conducted to measure pupils’ progress in word recognition, reading fluency, and comprehension. Findings indicated noticeable improvements in reading performance, with many pupils advancing by one to two reading levels. In addition, participants demonstrated greater confidence in reading aloud, increased willingness to communicate in English, and more active participation in classroom activities. The project highlights the value of peer collaboration, continuous reading practice, and assessment-based intervention in fostering literacy development. Overall, LitHubX provides a sustainable and engaging model for enhancing English literacy and building learners’ confidence in Malaysian primary school settings.
