REPELFUSION: BASIL-BASED MOSQUITO REPELLENT

RepelFusion is an innovative mosquito repellent project developed using Ocimum Basilicum, commonly known as basil, that is widely available in Malaysia. It is a herb known for its potent insect repelling properties. The project aims to offer a natural, sustainable, and effective alternative to chemical-based repellents, aligning with the increasing global demand for eco-friendly health solutions. Ocimum Basilicum contains eugenol and other essential oils that are proven to repel mosquitoes, making it a powerful natural ingredient for mosquito control. RepelFusion is available in multiple forms: spray, patch, and diffuser. Each form is designed to cater to different usage preferences, sprays for quick application, patches for wearable protection, and diffusers for ambient coverage. The production process involves extracting essential oils through steam distillation. These formulations are then packaged in biodegradable or recyclable containers, further emphasizing environmental responsibility. The product is simple to use: sprays can be applied directly to skin or clothing; patches are adhered to clothes; and diffusers can be placed indoors for continuous protection. However, limitations include shorter effectiveness duration compared to DEET, based products and possible allergic reactions for sensitive skin, which are mitigated through patch testing and clear usage instructions. RepelFusion supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by promoting health through mosquito-borne disease prevention and encouraging sustainable production. It also offers a scalable, nature-based solution with global health and environmental benefits.
