ST540: Extendable Portable Gangway With Pulley For Seamless Ferry Access By Wheelchair Passengers

TAN XUE JIA Universiti Utara Malaysia

Ensuring seamless accessibility for wheelchair passengers remains a major challenge in ferry transportation. Traditional gangways often lack inclusivity, causing mobility constraints, safety risks, and operational inefficiencies. This study introduces an extendable portable gangway with a pulley system to enhance ferry access for wheelchair users while improving overall efficiency. The innovation reduces embarkation and disembarkation time from 40 to 26 min, boosting boarding efficiency by 57%. It lowers maintenance costs, cutting mosaic upkeep expenses by 40%. A key safety feature, the integrated safety net, enhances passenger security. This solution improves accessibility, safety and cost efficiency, aligning with modern standards.
