The EcoGuard Strip innovation was born from a growing concern over the health and environmental risks posed by conventional chemical-based insect repellents. Many existing products, often in spray or liquid form, contain harsh substances that can trigger allergic reactions and long-term health complications, especially among vulnerable groups such as students and children. Recognizing this challenge, a group of young innovators set out to create a solution that is natural, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible. EcoGuard Strip is a biodegradable insect repellent made from citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) extract, embedded in dissolvable strips using starch-based materials. Designed for easy use in closed environments like dormitories, the strip releases a pleasant aroma while effectively repelling insects, particularly mosquitoes, without any harmful residue. The innovation follows a structured development process: problem analysis, user need identification, natural material research, product design, formulation testing, and field validation. The outcomes have been impressive, showing up to 65% reduction in insect presence and receiving highly positive feedback from trial users. The product also aligns strongly with the Year 6 Science curriculum (DSKP KPM), especially under learning standard 9.1.5 which emphasizes sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship. By combining scientific inquiry, creativity, and ecological awareness, EcoGuard Strip exemplifies how student-led innovation can contribute to healthier living and sustainable futures. This documentary captures their journey, an inspiring model of how real-world issues can be solved through education, innovation, and teamwork.
