This study was conducted to assist first-semester students of the Diploma in Digital Creative Arts Technology in understanding the fundamentals of visual art more easily and effectively for the course DVD10243, Visual Design. This innovation employs visually-based notes and an artwork booklet named ‘Ex-Pro ART’. The respondents in this study consisted of 58 first-semester students from the Diploma in Digital Creative Arts Technology (DCS), Department of Design and Visual Communication, Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Perlis (PTSS). This group of students was found to have difficulty understanding the fundamentals of visual art in the DVD10243, Visual Design course due to their limited prior knowledge of visual art. Following the implementation of this teaching and learning innovation, data analysis showed that nearly all respondents demonstrated a positive improvement in understanding the basics of visual art. The percentage of respondents mastering the fundamentals of visual art increased from 20% in the pre-test to 92% in the post-test. Moreover, based on observations, the use of Ex-Pro ART has enhanced students’ interest in learning, improved achievement, and fostered an enjoyable learning environment. The results of this action research show that the use of Ex-Pro ART can help improve respondents’ mastery of skills in understanding the fundamentals of visual art in the DVD10243, Visual Design course.
