Malaysia is a well-known country rich in diverse cultural heritage. However,
modernization and globalization have put this legacy at risk, both in tangible and
intangible forms. The decline in cultural awareness among younger generations has
led to Malaysian traditions gradually fading over time. This project, titled Tracing
Sam's Root, is a digital interactive storybook designed to highlight this issue by
reintroducing and celebrating Malaysia’s cultural heritage. The primary objectives are
to determine the key design factors for digital storytelling experiences, to develop a
platform that introduces Malaysian cultural heritage to young readers and to evaluate
the effectiveness of the project in promoting Malaysia’s diverse culture. As an
engaging educational tool, the storybook focuses on primary school children aged 7
to 12, as this is a crucial stage for nurturing cultural awareness. This project
implemented the ADDIE model methodology (Analysis, Design, Development,
Implementation and Evaluation) to ensure a systematic and well-structured
approach. Based on the evaluation results, over 95% of respondents showed
positive responses. It has been proven that users gain increased interest and a
deeper understanding of Malaysia’s culture after engaging with the storybook. These
findings prove that this interactive digital storytelling initiative is an effective approach
to instill a lasting appreciation for ancestral traditions and contribute to the
preservation of the country’s rich heritage.
