CrayOil© is an innovative green chemistry initiative that mitigates two critical environmental challenges: the hazardous pollution caused by improper waste cooking oil disposal and the art supply industry’s heavy reliance on petroleum-based paraffin wax and synthetic dyes. This project transforms waste cooking oil into high-quality, 100% non-toxic crayons through a scalable, zero-waste manufacturing process. The methodology involves rigorously filtering and naturally deodorizing waste cooking oil, thermally blending it with natural beeswax for structural durability, and incorporating lipophilic organic powders (such as turmeric, beetroot, and matcha) for vibrant, safe coloration. The final product is efficiently mass-produced using CAD-designed, 3D-printed reusable molds. As a commercial venture, CrayOil© benefits from exceptionally high profit margins by sourcing its primary raw material at near-zero cost since it is typically a disposal liability for restaurants. Highlighting the strong market viability of this product, 85.5% of surveyed consumers expressed interest in eco-friendly and non-toxic art supplies. By competitively targeting eco-conscious parents, educational institutions, and restaurants, CrayOil© bridges the gap between waste management and materials science. Ultimately, this sustainable alternative promotes Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11 and 12 by creatively engineering hazardous kitchen waste into a safe, profitable, and functional tool for artistic expression.
