The Smart Sharpener Bin is an eco-friendly and efficient innovation aimed at automating the pencil sharpening process while promoting sustainable waste management in schools and educational settings. Traditional sharpeners often result in frequent interruptions, manual labor for emptying shavings, and reliance on non-renewable electricity. This project addresses these issues by integrating three electronic sharpeners into a single system powered by solar energy, ensuring sustainability. An ultrasonic sensor is used to monitor the fill level of the shavings bin. When the bin approaches its capacity, the system sends real-time alerts to a Telegram bot, notifying maintenance staff for timely disposal. The entire system is controlled by a microcontroller (Arduino), with all components calibrated and assembled to work seamlessly. The smart integration of solar energy, automatic sharpening, and IoT-based alert systems minimizes manual effort, reduces classroom disruptions, and supports environmental conservation. Data collected from testing shows that the system operates reliably, the sensor accurately detects bin fill levels, and users find the setup convenient and time-saving. This project not only enhances operational efficiency but also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, making it a novel solution for modern educational environments.
