Detection of boric acid in food is essential due to their potential harm to humans. However, developing affordable and rapid methods for their detection, particularly with the necessary selectivity to differentiate between various boric acids, remains a challenge.
Herein, we present a low-cost curcuma longa paper-based detector for boric acid detection, that has been identified for its potential as a natural pH indicator. This product is made up from natural substances which are turmeric and ethanol. Curcuma Longa or turmeric is a commercially available natural dye (usually in powder form) is a potent compound with various applications.
The analysis revealed that the curcuma longa paper-based detector exhibited sensitivity to boric acid, with a colorimetric response that ranged from yellow to red, displaying varying shades of red depending on the concentration of boric acid.
Our curcuma longa paper-based detector offers a compelling combination of simplicity in manufacturing, easy to use, can detect quickly and cost-effectiveness underscoring their potential for routine food quality monitoring which has boric acid in real food samples like noodles.
