The Structured Participation Tracking and Scoring System (SPTSS) is an innovative pedagogical framework designed to transform the traditional tutorial environment into an active learning space. Developed at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the system addresses the common challenge of student reticence by utilising a transparent, point-based tracking mechanism. Unlike conventional participation grading, which can be subjective, the SPTSS provides clear, criterion-referenced scores for observable behaviours such as answering questions, engaging in peer discussion, and peer teaching.
A critical feature of the innovation is its focus on reducing the fear of negative evaluation; for instance, the rubric awards points even for incorrect attempts, to encourage risk-taking. Initial implementation results involving 77 students demonstrated that 66.2% of participants recorded positive scores within the first week, indicating a significant shift toward equitable engagement. By integrating gamification principles like immediate feedback and transparent progress tracking, the SPTSS fosters a sense of competence and autonomy among students. Ultimately, this low-cost, spreadsheet-based tool offers a scalable solution for educators seeking to revitalise classroom dynamics and improve academic outcomes in higher education
