Waste cooking oil is commonly originated from palm oil and mainly used in the daily cooking especially in frying process. Improper disposal of waste cooking oil can cause environmental pollution, especially water and soil. The objective of the project is to convert the waste cooking oil into an eco-friendly handwash soap by saponification process. In this method, NaOH solution (lye) and water are used to produce natural solid soap. The leftover solid soap pieces were also recycled into liquid soap using 'hot process' method. This step is to make sure that the remaining soap is not wasted ('zero' waste target). The cleansing effectiveness of the produced soap is evaluated by Stain Removal Test and result has shown that the effectiveness of the product is almost similar to a commercial soap. Finally, the product is contributed to our school in order to support the hand hygiene program which was held to prevent Covid-19 and Influenza outbreak. As conclusion, the project has significant impact by converting the waste cooking oil into an eco-friendly, affordable and sustainable product.
