Abstract

Innovation in Rehabilitation: Transforming Education Behind Bars Through Diploma in Entrepreneurship

This innovation introduces a transformative rehabilitation model that integrates a Diploma in Entrepreneurship into correctional education to equip prisoners with market-relevant skills, entrepreneurial mindsets, and pathways to sustainable livelihoods upon release. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is the only university in Malaysia provides program in Malaysia prison. This innovation bridges that gap by embedding entrepreneurship education as a structured, accredited diploma delivered within correctional institutions. The program combines entrepreneurial mindset development, financial literacy, digital business skills, business planning with rehabilitation goals. Using full face-to-face teaching and learning, students develop business ideas tailored to their social and economic contexts. The curriculum is aligned with national qualification frameworks, enabling inmates to graduate with a recognized credential that improves employability and self-employment opportunities. This innovation applies entrepreneurship skills, focusing on self-efficacy, opportunity recognition, and ethical business practice. This program also proved an increase students’ engagement, improved financial planning skills, and stronger reintegration readiness among them. The expected impact includes reduced recidivism, enhanced employability, and social reintegration, contributing to safer communities and lower correctional costs. This initiative redefines prisons as centers of human capital development, demonstrating how Diploma in Entrepreneurship can serve as a powerful tool for social innovation and inclusive economic growth.
