ST2021: Ecodrop: Drop, Renew, Recycle

Wong Tiam Hee Taylor's College

EcoDrop: Drop, Renew, Recycle is an innovative solution designed to address Malaysia’s growing electronic waste crisis. Malaysia generates approximately 24.5 million units of e-waste annually, yet only 1% is properly recycled, causing harmful substances such as lead and mercury to pollute the environment. Existing recycling methods are often inconvenient and inaccessible to the public. EcoDrop introduces an e-waste recycling vending machine that provides a simple, rewarding, and accessible disposal system. The machine can be placed in public areas such as electronics stores, schools, government buildings, and NGO facilities.

Users deposit unwanted electronic devices into the machine, select the waste category through a touchscreen, and gain member points or store vouchers based on the item’s weight. All collected waste is transferred to DOE-approved recycling facilities. By combining convenience, incentives, and sustainability, EcoDrop aims to increase public participation in e-waste recycling while reducing environmental pollution and promoting responsible waste management practices in Malaysia.
