ST2020: SafeNest +
Joyce Wang Tzi Yan Taylor's College
Every year, children and elderly individuals suffer from heatstroke after being accidentally left inside parked vehicles. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), more than 1,010 children have died from vehicular heatstroke in the United States since 1998, averaging 37 deaths annually. SafeNest+ is an innovative smart back-support system designed to prevent such tragic incidents. The product functions as a supportive back rest equipped with a weight sensor that detects the presence of a person seated in the vehicle.
It also contains temperature sensors that continuously monitor the car’s internal environment. Once the car engine is turned off, SafeNest+ activates automatically. If the temperature rises to a dangerous level while someone is detected in the car, an alert notification is immediately sent to the parent’s or owner’s mobile phone. In addition, a detachable fan automatically turns on to provide cooling and reduce the risk of heatstroke. The system is powered sustainably using rechargeable batteries connected to solar panels.
