SeaWrap: Marine-derived Edible Packaging as a Sustainable Alternative to Fossil-fuel Plastics

Conventional plastics take over 500 years to decompose, continuously shedding toxic microplastics that contaminate water systems and marine food chains. SeaWrap tackles this directly through a 100% biodegradable, edible packaging film derived from fast-growing marine seaweed, aligning with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

By extracting natural polysaccharides like alginate, agar, and carrageenan which are from brown and red seaweed, SeaWrap engineers a flexible film that mirrors conventional plastic in strength and performance, while naturally decomposing in soil within four to six weeks with zero toxic residue. It is tasteless, odorless, and fully safe for human consumption.

Target applications include edible water and juice pods for sporting events, soluble sachets for instant beverages, and wrapping for fast-food and dry-good retailers. Its odorless composition also prevents wildlife foraging, with secondary outer packaging providing added protection during transport and storage.

SeaWrap offers a scalable, market-ready solution to the global plastic crisis that are safe to eat, and kind to the planet.
