Flooding is a common problem during heavy rainfall, often caused by waste such as leaves and plastic accumulating inside drains. When water flow is obstructed, drains can overflow and lead to flooding. To address this issue, our team developed HydroGrid, a drainage system that separates waste from water before blockages can form. Waste is directed into a collection chamber while water continues flowing through the drainage system. The product works by allowing water to enter the chamber at an angle, creating rotational motion and forming a vortex. This vortex creates lower pressure at the center and higher pressure near the outer wall, enabling separation. Clean water moves toward the center and flows into the drain outlet, while heavier debris like leaves, plastic, sand, and food particles are pushed outward by centrifugal force and collected along the chamber walls for removal. By preventing the build-up of debris, HydroGrid helps improve drainage efficiency and reduce the risk of flooding. The system is simple to maintain and can be further enhanced through the use of stronger materials and a monitoring system that alerts workers when maintenance is needed. HydroGrid has the potential to be implemented in schools, residential areas, and urban drainage networks to support more effective flood management.
