Rust is a common problem that affects many metal objects used in daily life, such as keys, scissors, nails, screws, coins and kitchen utensils. Rust not only weakens these items but also causes stains on clothes, bags and various surfaces. Commercial rust removers more expensive and contain harsh chemicals that may be harmful to users and the environment. To address this issue, we developed NDe_Rust, a natural, safe and low-cost rust removal innovation created by students of SJK Chung Hua Buso. NDe_Rust uses a simple mixture of salt and vinegar—two easily available kitchen ingredients. The solution is effective because vinegar (acetic acid) dissolves iron oxide, while salt provides mild abrasion that helps remove loosened rust. This makes NDe_Rust an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical products. It is easy to use: simply soak or spray the affected item, wait for a few minutes, and wipe the rust away. Small-scale experiments were carried out on coins, zippers, screws, nails and other rusty objects. Results show that NDe_Rust softens and removes rust effectively within minutes. The method is safe for household and school use and helps extend the lifespan of everyday items while preventing rust stains. Additionally, it reduces dependence on chemical cleaners, contributing to a safer environment. NDe_Rust also has strong commercial potential. It can be produced as a convenient DIY kit or packaged into a ready-to-use spray bottle with a standardised formula. With its affordability, practicality and eco-friendly nature, NDe_Rust holds promise for school bookstores, supermarkets and online markets.
