Household food waste is a critical environmental and economic issue in Malaysia, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and causing unnecessary financial strain, particularly among low-income (B40) households. To address this challenge, we propose DapurBijak, an innovative AI-powered mobile application designed to optimize household food inventory management and proactively prevent food waste. Unlike generic pantry applications, DapurBijak is tailored to the local demographic and integrates an Artificial Intelligence Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanner that automatically extracts purchased items and estimates their expiry dates directly from local grocery receipts.
The application utilizes a color-coded "traffic light" alert system to notify users of impending expiration dates. To further encourage zero-waste habits, DapurBijak features a localized AI Recipe Generator that suggests customized Malaysian recipes utilizing only the ingredients that are nearing their expiry. Additionally, the app includes a 'Community Food Rescue' platform, enabling users to seamlessly donate surplus edible food to neighbors or local food banks. By blending cost-saving mechanisms with environmental conservation, DapurBijak offers a practical, highly localized solution that directly supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
