Maintaining clean whiteboards is a fundamental yet often neglected task in educational and professional environments. Standard dry-erase ink becomes increasingly difficult to remove if left for extended periods, leading to surface staining and "ghosting." This project introduces Smiley, an autonomous robotic duster designed to streamline whiteboard maintenance through magnetic mobility, intelligent sensing, and dual-mode cleaning.
Smiley utilizes a high-strength magnetic chassis and specialized magnetic wheels, allowing it to maintain a secure grip and navigate vertical or inclined steel-backed whiteboards. The system is equipped with an integrated optical sensor array capable of detecting ink density and surface contaminants.
On-Demand & Autonomous Activation: Users can trigger a cleaning cycle via a manual interface. Additionally, Smiley features a "Smart-Idle" timer that automatically initiates a cleaning sweep if the board remains untouched for 60 minutes, preventing ink from bonding to the surface.
Dual-Action Cleaning System: Beyond standard dry dusting, Smiley incorporates a specialized reservoir and dispensing system for water or sanitizing agents. This secondary mode ensures deep cleaning and anti-bacterial treatment for stubborn stains.
Intelligent Navigation: Using its sensors, the robot identifies "dirty" zones to ensure 100% coverage while avoiding obstacles or board edges.
Smiley effectively reduces the manual labor associated with classroom maintenance and extends the lifespan of whiteboard surfaces. By combining a friendly, approachable aesthetic—featuring a prominent smiley-face design—with advanced automation and sanitization capabilities, this project demonstrates a practical application of robotics in improving everyday workspace hygiene and efficiency.
