In the wood processing and furniture manufacturing industries, the belt sander is a critical tool for producing smooth and even wood surfaces. However, existing belt sanders exhibit several deficiencies that compromise user comfort and safety. Wood pattern fabrication processes are a major component of both woodworking and casting workshops, making the use of belt sanders essential. This innovation project aims to enhance the performance and safety features of belt sanders used in the wood processing industry, as well as for students at Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA). Current belt sanders present key issues, including high noise levels, the lack of an effective dust extraction system, and significant vibration that impacts user ergonomics. To address these challenges, several improvements were developed: the integration of a vacuum dust extraction system, implementation of noise reduction measures, and enhancements to minimize vibration. Additionally, a safety guard was introduced at the cutting area to provide better protection for users during operation. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to investigate dust extraction technologies, noise and vibration control methods, and safety standards for woodworking machinery. The project methodology involved the design and fabrication of an improved belt sander, followed by noise and vibration testing, data collection and analysis, and a user safety evaluation. Comparative analyses between the existing and the modified machines were carried out to assess the effectiveness of the enhancements. The results demonstrate that the improved belt sander significantly enhances user comfort and safety, while promoting a cleaner and quieter working environment. This project is expected to contribute meaningfully to advancements in the wood processing industry and to improved workplace safety. With an efficient dust extraction system, reduced noise emissions, and minimized vibration, the upgraded belt sander delivers superior performance and ensures greater protection for its users.
