ABSTRACT

The increasing issues of water scarcity and food waste have created a need for sustainable and innovative solutions. This project, Hydro Peel: Smart Water-Storing Biopolymer from Kitchen Waste, focuses on converting organic kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peels into an eco-friendly bio-polymer capable of absorbing and retaining water. The biopolymer is produced through a simple process involving blending, heating, and natural chemical treatment to extract plant-based polymers like starch and cellulose. Experimental results show that the Hydro Peel biopolymer can absorb up to 8 times its weight in water and significantly improve soil moisture retention. Soil mixed with Hydro Peel remained moist for a longer period compared to normal soil, and plants grown with the polymer showed better survival under limited watering conditions. In addition, the material is biodegradable and decomposes naturally within a few weeks, making it safe for the environment. This innovation provides a low-cost, sustainable alternative to synthetic water-retaining materials and promotes the concept of waste-to-wealth. Hydro Peel has strong potential for application in home gardening and agriculture, especially in areas facing water shortages.
