: The Ocimum team from SJKT Kajang presents the development of an innovative herbal oral care product, Ocimum Herbal Toothpowder, addressing the growing concerns over dental health and the risks associated with synthetic chemicals in commercial toothpaste. Dental cavities and gum disease affect a significant proportion of the population globally and in Malaysia, highlighting the urgent need for safe and effective alternatives. Aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), our product leverages natural ingredients for oral hygiene enhancement.

Our methodology involved handpicking and drying herbs such as Ocimum tenuiflorum (Holy basil), Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary), and Mentha piperita (Peppermint), alongside store-bought natural powders including Azadirachta indica (Neem bark powder), Acacia arabica (Acacia bark powder), Cinnamomum verum (Cinnamon bark powder), Cocos nucifera (coconut oil), Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking soda), and Sodium chloride (sea salt). Citrus sinensis (Orange peel) were collected from used orange which is a recycled item in the product that was sun dried. These components were processed to extract essential oils and blended to formulate the toothpowder. The product emphasizes sustainability by incorporating recycled orange peel materials, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Laboratory testing demonstrated that the toothpowder effectively inhibits microbial growth and maintains a safe alkaline pH range (8.5–9.0). Its novel formulation distinguishes it in the herbal oral care market, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). The therapeutic benefits of the included herbs—such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and plaque-reducing properties—highlight its potential in managing gingival and periodontal diseases.

The product usage involves applying a small quantity to a toothbrush, brushing for 90 seconds twice daily, which is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Financial analysis projects a profitable commercial venture, enabling sustained production and wider community outreach. A pilot study with 20 respondents revealed high satisfaction and willingness to recommend the product, confirming its efficacy and consumer acceptance.

In conclusion, the Ocimum Herbal Toothpowder offers a 100% natural, safe, economical, and environmentally responsible solution for dental care, with promising commercial potential and significant positive impact on oral health.
