SS1856: Grammar Grocery Quest

LIM XIN JIE Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Hussein Onn

Grammar Grocery Quest is an innovative game-based learning intervention developed to enhance grammar learning among primary school pupils through meaningful, real-life experiences. The innovation was implemented from 27 to 30 April 2026 during school recess and was designed to address several classroom challenges, including low pupil engagement, limited application of grammar rules in authentic contexts, diverse learning needs, and uneven learning progress. Grounded in integrated language learning principles, the innovation combines shopping and food-preparation scenarios with mission-based grammar tasks. Pupils participate in three interconnected stages: Shop, where they identify ingredients and construct grammatically correct sentences; Make, where they engage in hands-on food preparation activities; and Speak, where they communicate using target language structures with peers. The innovation incorporates gamification, experiential learning, collaborative learning, and real-world application to create an engaging learning environment. Through differentiated tasks and authentic language use, pupils are encouraged to apply grammar knowledge in meaningful situations rather than through traditional worksheet-based activities. Observational findings and teacher reflections indicated positive outcomes, including increased pupil engagement, improved grammar competence, enhanced communication skills, and a more enjoyable learning experience. The innovation also supported active participation among pupils with varying proficiency levels by providing accessible and motivating learning opportunities. Overall, Grammar Grocery Quest demonstrates the potential of integrating game-based and experiential learning approaches to transform grammar instruction into a meaningful, learner-centred experience that promotes both language development and active classroom participation.
