ST1780: SmartWaste: An AI-Powered Mobile System With Integrated Loyalty Rewards For Intelligent Waste Classification And Sustainable Recycling

MUHAMMAD FAUZAN BIN MAZLAM Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin

The rapid increase in global waste generation, particularly in developing nations like Malaysia, presents significant environmental challenges, with landfills currently accounting for 89% of waste disposal. Despite efforts like the "Separation at Source Initiative" (SSI), Malaysia faces low recycling participation due to public confusion and inadequate waste classification systems. This paper introduces SmartWaste, a mobile-based intelligent waste classification and disposal system leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to address these challenges. The system utilizes image recognition for real-time waste categorization, provides actionable disposal guidelines, locates nearby recycling centers, and implements a novel loyalty point rewards system to incentivize sustainable practices. Integrating advanced AI with user-friendly mobile technology and behavioral incentives, SmartWaste simplifies waste segregation, boosts public engagement, and contributes to achieving Malaysia's sustainability goals. This system aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 13, promoting responsible consumption and climate action. The SmartWaste project aims to enhance waste management practices, improve recycling rates, data analysis, and reduce reliance on landfills, ultimately supporting a more sustainable future through both technological innovation and behavioral economics principles.
