The Smart Driver Alert is a microcontroller-based safety system designed to detect early signs of driver drowsiness and provide immediate warning alerts. The system uses sensor-based monitoring to track eye activity and head movement, helping to reduce accidents caused by fatigue.Components Used
• Arduino Uno R3 – Main controller that processes all sensor inputs
• SW-520D Tilt Sensor – Detects head nodding or sudden tilt movements
• IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor – Used to detect eye closure or blinking activity
• Active Buzzer Module – Produces alert sound
• Red LED – Provides visual warning
• 220 Ohm Resistor (multiple units) – Controls current to protect components
• Breadboard – Used for circuit assembly without soldering
• Jumper Wires (Male-to-Male & Female-to-Male) – Used for connections
• 9V Battery – Provides power to the system
Working PrincipleThe system operates by continuously monitoring the driver’s condition using two main detection methods:
1. Eye Blink Detection
The IR obstacle avoidance sensor is positioned in front of the driver’s eyes.
• When the eyes are open, the IR signal reflects normally
• When the eyes remain closed for a longer duration, the sensor detects interruption
• This indicates possible drowsiness
2. Head Movement Detection
The SW-520D tilt sensor detects abnormal head movements such as nodding or drooping:
• Normal posture → no signal triggered
• Sudden tilt or nod → sensor activates
3. Processing Unit
The Arduino Uno R3 receives signals from both sensors and compares them with preset conditions:
• If drowsiness is detected → alert system is triggered
4. Alert System
Once fatigue is identified:
• The buzzer emits a loud sound
• The red LED starts blinking
This dual alert helps the driver regain attention immediately.
